HDTV - Turn it ON!
Overview
The analog to digital television (DTV) transition is going strong. TV manufacturers are still leading the DTV charge, offering more than 450 models of DTV products including integrated sets, digital monitors and set-top receivers at affordable prices. CEA research shows a remarkable level of satisfaction with the product with, as expected, the biggest disappointment being the relative dearth of HDTV programming. We're making progress in the transition and we're now in the home stretch.
The Federal Communication Commission's expressed goals for digital television (DTV) are: "to preserve and promote free, universally available, local broadcast television in a digital world;" and "to promote spectrum efficiency and rapid recovery of spectrum by fostering the swift development of DTV."
CEA is working with government and related industries to address the few remaining policy issues, such as intellectual property rights in the digital world, and to create solutions that will avoid marketplace confusion and needless delay - bringing the enhanced performance and services found in digital television to consumers as soon as possible.
CEA has led in the effort to promote HDTV to consumers, as well, via viewing parties for major DTV broadcasts such as the SuperBowl and the NCAA men's basketball championships; DTV displays at home and design shows that allow consumers to see the latest DTV products in a home theater environment; and movie theater promotional slides and displays.

Understanding Digital Television
What Is Digital Television?
Experience television like never before. Pictures so sharp and clear you'd think they were real. It is television without ghosts, snow or interference. The digital sound completely surrounds you, making you feel as though you are right in the center of your favorite show. Digital TV is an entirely new system that will ultimately replace today's existing analog system. The term Digital TV refers to televisions that can receive and display digital images. HDTV, or High Definition television, is the highest quality Digital TV available, offering more than five times the sharpness of today's television, along with digital surround sound capability. Digital TV is also available as EDTV (enhanced definition TV) or SDTV (standard definition TV), each with improved pictures and sound over today's analog . . . . . .
